Introduction:
Udaipur, a small town in Tripura once upon a time which was known as Rangamati was the capital of the royal family of Tripura. For more than 1169 years Udaipur (Rangamati) was the capital of  Tripura. The name Udaipur came from the name of Maharaja Uday Manikya. Before becoming a state of India, Tripura was ruled by the kings. The royal family of Tripura dug up many lakes in Udaipur which still exist. That's why Udaipur is known as "the Lake City of Tripura". The main lakes of Udaipur are Jagannath dighi, mahadev dighi, Amar sagar, Dhanisagar, kalyan sagar. All these are artificial lakes. The word "Dighi" means lake.

Jagannath dighi is one of the oldest lakes of Udaipur that dug up the South-West corner of the Jagannath Bari of Udaipur. Believed to have been excavated during the reign of Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in the 15th century, the Jagannath Dighi served as a significant water source for the surrounding villages and also played a vital role in irrigation. Beyond its utilitarian purpose, the dighi became an integral part of the religious and cultural fabric of the region, hosting various festivals and rituals throughout the year.
Surrounded by lush greenery and adorned with a majestic temple dedicated to Lord Jagannath, the dighi serves as a pilgrimage site for devotees. The serene atmosphere and breathtaking landscape make it a popular tourist destination as well, attracting visitors seeking solace and tranquility.

Mahadev dighi is also an ancient lake of Udaipur, dug up in front of the Mahadev Bari, Udaipur. It is also known as Bijoy Sagar. The lake was dug up during the period of  Maharaja Govinda Manikya. This ancient reservoir, also known as Mahadev Lake, holds immense significance in the cultural fabric of Udaipur. The tranquil ambiance of Mahadev Dighi is further enhanced by the lush greenery and picturesque surroundings. It offers a serene retreat for those seeking solace and a connection with the past. The calm waters of the reservoir mirror the sky, creating a mesmerizing sight.

Kalyan Sagar is the holiest lake of Udaipur which is situated Eastern side of the Famous Tripura Sundari temple. Maharaja kalyan Manikya dug up this lake in 1501 AD. This place is almost 4 km far from the main town of Udaipur. This lake is famous for rare species of turtles and fish. Many visitors come here every day. The surrounding area of Kalyan Sagar is a paradise for nature enthusiasts. One can witness a diverse array of bird species, making it a haven for birdwatchers. The mesmerizing sunsets over the lake offer a spectacle of colors, creating a breathtaking panorama that leaves visitors awe-struck.

Amar Sagar can be seen on the left side of the road after crossing sunamura chowmohani on the way from Udaipur to Matabari. Amar Sagar, meaning "Eternal Lake," is steeped in legends and folklore. According to popular belief, the lake was created by the warrior prince Amar Manikya during his exile. The tranquil waters of Amar Sagar reflect the rich cultural heritage of Tripura, as it is home to several beautiful temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Kali. There are some beautiful parks for children on both banks of the lake. This lake is famous for fish farming. 
Amar Sagar truly encapsulates the essence of Udaipur, Tripura, offering a peaceful retreat where one can reconnect with nature and delve into the intriguing tales of the past.
            

Besides these famous lakes, there are many lakes which are scattered across Udaipur. These were dug up by the members of the Divans of ancient Tripura.
